Tennessee Town Uses Technology To Slow Down Speeders And Prevent Automobile Accidents

Over the past year in my blog The Tennessee Auto Accident Attorney we have followed the proliferation of Red Light Cameras (RLCs) in towns and cities across Tennessee. Data shows that the RLCs are reducing fatalities, injuries and property damage claims. There are still detractors who claim that the RLCs are simply revenue enhancing devices and that they don’t do what they are supposed to do, but as the data comes in these people are simply unwilling to face the facts. Well, now the naysayers have another technology to complain about.

An article yesterday in the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports on a new system just authorized for use in Millington, Tennessee. The system provided by American Traffic Solutions is built into a nondescript van that can be moved around the city and that monitors speed of the vehicles around it. If a vehicle is caught speeding a ticket is mailed to the offender. The technology is basically the same as that used in the RLCs.

Speeding—traveling too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limits, is a factor in almost one-third of all fatal crashes and costs America approximately $27.7 billion dollars in economic costs each year. Speeding is a safety concern on all roads, regardless of their speed limits. Much of the public concern about speeding has been focused on high-speed Interstates. The Interstate System, however, actually has the best safety record of all roads and the lowest fatality rate of all road classes.

Almost 50 percent of speeding-related fatalities occur on lower speed collector and local roads, which carry only 27.9 percent of the total vehicle miles traveled in the United States. Collector roads usually have legal speed limits of 55 mi/h or less. Speed limits on local roads are often 35 mi/h or lower.
