Red Light Cameras Reduce Intersection Crashes
It appears that the Kingsport Mayor and Board of Alderman are pleased with their decision to install Red Light Cameras (RLC) at several strategic intersections. According to the Kingsport Times-News the city leaders have decided to ignore calls for a reduction in the fine for running a red light from the present $100.00. Apparently the fine has deterred people from running red lights since crash statistics from the police department show a reduction from more than 20 several years ago to 7 in 2008.
According to the Times-News article and information from the website of Redflex Traffic Systems, Kinsgport has RLCs at 10 intersections and in 2008 and 2009 16,238 tickets were issued with 14, 197 being paid and the others have been sent to collection agencies., bringing in just shy of $1.5 million to the city.
Preventing injuries and deaths at intersections should be a high priority for towns and cities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2005 alone, nearly 9,200 people died and approximately one million people were injured in intersection-related crashes which account for approximately 40-45 percent of all crashes.
